Day 8

Sunday we had a busy day! We started with breakfast at Wall Drug. Then we walked around and took in the spectacle. Torsten bought a train set and Lexi bought some stink bombs. (Oh joy!) Then we drove back to the Badlands. We drove around and stopped for pictures and to climb on the rocks. It rained in the morning, so it was very muddy and all our shoes were covered with mud very quickly! From there, we drove on to Rapid City and had a picnic lunch at a dinosaur park. This was an interesting place built by the WPA on a hill overlooking the city. The kids climbed on dinosaurs and we took in the view, before getting back in the car to head to Mount Rushmore. We enjoyed taking pictures at Mount Rushmore of our favorite presidents (Lexi- Lincoln and Washington and Katie- Jefferson).

Then we went on a tour of a gold mine and each received a sample of gold ore. Two German immigrants (who hated each other) worked the mine for 35 years and only found about $50 of gold in that whole time! We panned for gold and found a few tiny flakes to keep as a souvenir. From there, we drove through the Black Hills to Deadwood for the night. Our hotel was called Deadwood Dick’s and has lodging, a saloon, and an antique store. It has an old elevator from 1917 with doors you have to close manually, and the kids really enjoyed that. We walked around Deadwood and ate at Saloon 10 for dinner. It had sawdust on the floor and does reenactments of Wild Bill Hickock’s shooting. We missed the shooting, but we were able to take a picture with Hickock and we saw his original gravestone on the wall. We walked up and down Main Street and saw the saloon where Hickock was actually shot. We ended the day in our room on the 4th floor overlooking Deadwood with the kids playing together with the train set Torsten bought.

  1. I just told Elliott it looks so cool we should plan a trip there. Caroline tried to get me to buy her a train set today too- Torsten rubbed off on her!
