Day 19

Thursday we rode the BART into San Francisco. Torsten was very excited to ride the big white train and go through tunnels between stations. Then we took a boat to Alcatraz Island. We learned all about the island’s history as a Civil War fortress and prison for Confederate soldiers, a federal penitentiary, and the Indian occupation in the late 1960s. We hiked to the top of the island and did an audio tour through the prison. Torsten made it about 25 of the 45 minutes of the tour with his headphones on and then gave up. Lexi, however, was very intrigued by the story of the prison and the escape attempts. She wanted to do the audio tour a second time. She also bought a book about prisoners escaping and has already ready it twice! We road the boat back to the mainland after about 3 hours on the island.

We walked to Pier 39 for lunch. We ate at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company overlooking the Bay. Then we looked in some tourist shops, and Lexi bought some spy glasses. We stopped and watched the sea lions for a while and then walked on to Fisherman’s Wharf, where we bought San Francisco hoodies and a cable car ornament. Lexi found a spy store and bought a spy watch to go with her glasses. We walked on to Ghirardelli Square for some chocolates. Then we decided to ride a cable car back to the BART station. We had to wait in line for over an hour to ride it, but it was fun to ride it up and down some hilly streets and past Lombard street. We were exhausted by the time we got back to our hotel room, so we got dinner at a grocery store nearby and just relaxed to the sounds of the ocean.

  1. So gorgeous. I wish we were there, Caroline would have loved to ride the ‘choo choo.’ (Everything is either a choo choo or a bus these days). I love how into Alcatrez Lexi is!
